Shopify lets AI chatbots shop and pay for you, and the store keeps the customer
Shoppers can now buy inside ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI helpers, while the order and buyer details still go to the store.

Shopify wants AI chatbots to do your shopping. In an interview posted on October 28, the company said stores are now selling inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Muse and other AI helpers. These helpers are often called agents. They are chatbots that can take steps for you, like finding a product and paying for it.
Shopify also runs a page called shop.md. Its headline says you can turn any agent into your personal shopper. The page promises search tuned to you, checkout in one click with Shop Pay, and order tracking in the Shop app. It has buttons to add it to ChatGPT and to Claude.
Many store owners worry about one thing. If a chatbot makes the sale, do they lose the customer? Shopify says no. The order still belongs to the store. It shows up with the buyer's name, email and shipping details, like any other sale. If the buyer links a Shop account, the store also sees past orders and likes.
Shopify made one more point. For people who shop this way, finding the right item matters more than a fast checkout. They are not browsing for fun. They know what they want and ask for it.
For app builders, Shopify points to its product catalog. It says you can search over a billion products from its stores, with current prices and stock.
If you sell online, keep an eye on this. More buyers may start in a chat window instead of a search box.
Open it and check the claim yourself. That is the point.
