OpenAI is buying the small team whose code tools are already inside Codex
OpenAI says it will buy Pierre Computer Company, maker of the Trees and Diffs tools used in Codex. The deal still needs regulatory approval.

OpenAI is buying Pierre Computer Company, a small team that makes tools for working with code. OpenAI announced the deal on November 4.
If you have used the Codex app to look through files or check a change, you have already used Pierre's work. OpenAI says Codex uses two of Pierre's tools today. Trees helps people move through the files in a project. Diffs makes it easy to see what changed in the code.
Pierre also runs Code Storage. It is a service that lets apps store code and keep its history using Git. Git is a common system that saves every version of a project, so many people can work on it together.
OpenAI says the way teams use Git needs to change as AI coding agents do more of the work. These agents are AI programs that can write and change code on their own. Earlier this week, OpenAI also shared how it handles Git inside its own company with a system called Pando.
OpenAI says Pierre's open-source projects will stay open source, and it will keep adding to them. Code Storage customers can keep using the service after the deal closes, while OpenAI brings its features into Codex.
The deal is not done yet. It still needs the usual steps, including approval from regulators. Until then, the two companies stay separate. The announcement does not give a price.
For most people, nothing changes today. But OpenAI says it wants Codex to be the place where developers and AI agents take on their biggest projects.
Open it and check the claim yourself. That is the point.
