The company behind Claude is putting 5% of itself into a fund for the public good
Anthropic says it will commit 5% of its shares to a new fund. The fund can grow as the company grows, and it might give to charities or send money straight to people.

Anthropic, the company that makes the Claude AI assistant, announced a new fund on Sunday. It is called the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund.
The company says it will put 5% of its shares into the fund. Shares are the small pieces of ownership in a company. The plan still needs approval from the people who own Anthropic stock.
The fund can also grow. Anthropic's board may add another 2% for every 50% rise in the company's value above a set starting point.
Many tech companies give their top bosses stock rewards that keep growing. Anthropic says it is sending that kind of stock to the public good instead.
What will the fund do? Anthropic says it might make large gifts to charities. It might also send money straight to certain groups of people.
One example it gives is jobs. AI could create huge value, but it could also make work less steady for many people. Anthropic says it has already set aside $200 million to study and deal with this.
The fund will be a company fully owned by Anthropic, not a regular charity. None of its shares will be used for lobbying, which means trying to sway lawmakers, or for political giving.
The company also points to older promises. Its co-founders pledged to give away 80% of their shares. About half of its workers join a giving program that the company matches. With this new fund, Anthropic says roughly 20% of its shares will go to the public good.
